The Sri Sharada College, Basrur is an esteemed institution of higher learning affiliated to Mangalore University. The College was established in 1973 by the Sri Sharada College Trust with the noble vision of providing higher education to rural youth. The institution aims at empowering economically less fortunate and socially marginalized sections of society, with knowledge and skills required to face the challenges of the modern world.
The founders of the College also believe that no education is worth the name if the instructions in various disciplines are not accompanied by proper shaping of character. Hence, there is special focus on value-based education and cultivation of proper attitude and awareness of various responsibilities that they would need to shoulder in the future.
An inscription dated A.D. 1155 refers to Basrur as an urban centre, named ‘Hosapattana Basurepura’. It was a confluence of cultures during the Vijayanagara period. The foreign travellers, who visited Basrur during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, have left reliable accounts of the beauty of this town as a cultural centre and its usefulness as a port. The town is located in a serene atmosphere surrounded by paddy fields and coconut gardens watered by the river Varahi.
Due to certain changes that took place during the British rule, Kundapura developed as sub-divisional headquarters for administration, and Basrur lost its earlier glory and was pushed to socio-economic backwardness. With this in mind, the local visionaries established the Sri Sharada College in 1973, to provide under-graduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Management.
The College is located in 7.68 acres of serene land of the Basrur village. The atmosphere is peaceful and congenial for higher learning. The UGC has granted 2(f) and 12(b) tags to this institution. In 2004, the institution was accredited with B+ grade. In 2011, it was reaccredited with B grade with CGPA 2.54, under the new methodology. In 2016, it was reaccredited with B grade with a CGPA 2.38.

COLLEGE INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITIES
OBJECTIVE
The college has a good infrastructure facility which is extensively used for the students for enhancing their learning and to meet their academic growth in all respects. To a limited extent the college offers the existing infrastructure for the benefit of the public organisations for their activities especially during holidays and vacations.
MAINTENANCE POLICY
For the maintenance of the existing physical infrastructure, College Maintenance Committee is formed and it convenes meetings twice a year. For the total development and maintenance of campus , Campus and Equipment Maintenance Committee is formed. There are specific Advisory Committees for the maintenance of physical facilities available within the college premises. Library Advisory Committee, Canteen and Mid day meal committee, Sports and Games Committee and Sri Sharada Museum Committee are the specific committees. The various maintenance committees look after the maintenance budget implications. There is proper supervision for maintaining various physical facilities.
For maintenance of infrastructure, major repair and maintenance work is offered by the institution to outside agencies on contract basis. Computers and other electronic devices are maintained by the agencies who supplied the equipments under service agreements. For minor repair work , college staff is optimally used.
OPTIMUM UTILISATION OF INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITY
- College Auditorium is used for various types of programs and functions.
- Open – air theatre used for extra-curricular activities.
- To keep campus clean and green , garden is raised in front of the college.
- College Library ( Manjunatha Swamy Block ) is used for reference and reading.
- Back side area of the college is used for raising herbal garden with medicinal plants.
- Sri Sharada Museum is developed to create awareness among students to protect the heritage and antiques.
- Indoor Stadium is used to provide indoor games to the students.
- Outdoor stadium is used for sports and games for the students and also used by neighboring schools and associations for their sports and games especially during Sundays and holidays .
- Outdoor archaeological museum is developed in the college campus to protect archeological inscriptions belonged to Basrur.
All procedures and policies for maintaining and utilizing physical, academic and support facilities are shared through student handbook. (weblink) (Details to be found in the website) College Library: Reference periodicals section is situated in the first floor of the College Library building. While entering students should enter their name and class in a Register. Our college library is spacious and well stacked. It has about 30,760 books. Subscription to the library automation software Easylib and books are issued/ returned on bar-coded borrower’s cards. Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) facility is available at the circulation desk at the entrance of the library. Users can reserve books and get such information, as to whom a book is issued, when it is due date etc. Computers with broadband internet connection and reprographic facility is available to the users in the library. All the students are required to make the best use of the reading opportunity made available to them through the Reading Room Library. Students are requested to treat Library books as a sacred trust and use them with great care. Library will be kept open from 9-00 am. to 5-30 pm. on all working days except on Saturday. On Saturdays, the Library will be open from 9-00 am. to 1-30 pm. The Library includes Text books, Reference and Periodical section Book Bank. Library is kept open during the vacation also. Text book section: The text book section is situated in the ground floor of the building. The students may get the needed text books and other general books for home reading for one week and the date of returning of the book would be mentioned in the book issued. If the book is not returned on the date mentioned, the penalty of Re.1/- per day per book will be levied as an overdue charge. If a student does not return the book within a week after the due date, his/her name will be notified on the notice board, Even after the notification if he/she does not return the within a week after the due date, his/ her attendance in the class will be withheld and his/her name will be struck off from the attendance register. Books will be issued to the students of all classes on all working days. SC/ST book bank scheme: There are 2704 books in the Book Bank Scheme. In this scheme the books will be issued to SC/ST students with first preference and to the other students on merit basis. They can be retained for the full academic year. To review the condition of the books and they can be taken home again until the end of the academic year or the annual examination. For getting the books in this scheme the students should submit the application in the prescribed form. The selection of the students for getting the books will be made by the library.
