National Service Scheme [NSS] aims at the importance of democratic living and selfless service. The motto of NSS is “Not Me But You”. The symbol of NSS is based on the Giant Rath (Chariot) of World famous Konark Sun Temple at Orissa. There are eight bars in the wheel representing 24 hours of the day, where the NSS volunteers should be lively, active, energetic and full of spirit.

National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS is a student–centred programme and it is complementary to education. NSS is a government-sponsored public service scheme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with a primary focus on the development of the personality of students through community service. It is a noble experiment in academic extension. It inculcates the spirit of voluntary work among students and teachers through sustained community interaction. It brings our academic institutions closer to society. It is a link between the campus and community, the college and village, knowledge and action. The overall aim of NSS is the Personality Development of students through community service. It gives an extension dimension to the Higher Education system and orients the student youth to community service. The Motto of NSS “Not Me But You”, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service.

The NSS unit of Sri  Sharada College Basrur was initiated by the College from the very beginning of its origin at the university level.

In respect of NSS candidates, the bonus marks will be awarded on the basis of NSS certificates signed by the Vice-Chancellor or the Pro-Vice-Chancellor to volunteers who have completed 240 hours of work within a period of 2 years in the courses of study immediately preceding the course for which admission is sought.

An institution will be allotted NSS units according to the strength of the students, with a maximum of 100 students in each unit. These units will have the Principal of the College as the Director, a teaching staff (who should be an organizer, educator, coordinator, supervisor, administrator, a public-relation person) as the NSS Programme Officer and faculty of the college as advisory committee members.

There is one unit of NSS in the College, with a total strength of 104. Mr Raghavendra Shetty S(Lecturer in Commerce) is the Programme Officer.

The main objectives of NSS are:

  • To understand the community in which we work.
  • To understand ourselves in relation to the community
  • To understand the needs and problems of the community.
  • To develop social and civic responsibility.
  • To find practical solutions to individual and community problems.
  • To develop group living and sharing of responsibilities.
  • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic values.
  • To develop the ability to meet emergencies and national disasters.
  • To practise the sense of national integration and social harmony

The following are the major activities of the unit;

  • Celebration of National Yoga Day
  • Swatchhtha hi Sewa: Labour Day Celebration
  • Green City, Clean City: Basrur Rally
  • Rally on National Energy Conservation Day
  • Earn While You Learn Campaign
  • Connecting People: Mega Camp for Legal Services.

Students’ activities under NSS during the reporting year:

  1. 102 NSS volunteers participated in the VANAMAHOTSAVA Programme on 5th June 2019.
  2. 71 NSS Volunteers participated in Yoga on the occasion of International Yoga day celebrated on 21st June 2019 in our college.
  3. 57 NSS Volunteers participated in Anti-Tobacco Day on the occasion of “World No Tobacco Day” in the college on 28th June 2019.
  4. Kavya III B.A, Soubhagyalakshmi III B. Com A, Ashmitha II B. Com. A, Supreetha II B. Com A have participated in the Leadership and Selection Training Camp organized by Mangalore University from 10th to 16th July 2019.
  5. 62 NSS volunteers participated in the “ WesternGhat Greenery Programme” held at Byndoor organized by the NSS wing of our college in collaboration with the National Environment Care Federation of India on 14th July 2019.
  6. 102 NSS volunteers participated in the Temple cleaning Programme in Mahalingeshwara Temple Basrur organized by the NSS wing of our college in collaboration with Mahalingeshwara Temple Basrur on 23rd July 2019.
  7. 102 NSS volunteers participated in the “Plastic Prevention Awareness Rally” in Basrur Town organized by the NSS wing of our college in collaboration with GramaPanchayathBasrur on 7th August 2019.
  8. 64 NSS volunteers have participated in the Swachhatha Hi SevaAbhiyan on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi held at our adopted village Balkur organized by the NSS wing of our college in collaboration with GramaPanchayathBalkur on 2nd October 2019.
  9. 102 NSS volunteers participated in the Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th Birthday on 2nd October 2019.
  10. “World Aids Day” observed on 1st December 2019, 46 NSS volunteers participated in the Roadshow conducted atBasrur.
  11. 55 NSS volunteers participated in NSS annual special camp which was organized in GHP schoolMolahalli from 20th to 26th December 2019.
  12. 53 NSS volunteers donated blood at the Blood Donation Camp held on 14th January 2020, organized by the NSS wing of our college in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Unit Kundapur.
  13. 52 NSS volunteers actively participated in the construction of a floral garden inside the college campus on 2nd FEBRUARY 2020.
  14. 102 NSS volunteers participated in the Solid Liquid Resource Management Training Programme organized by the NSS wing of our college in collaboration with SwachhaBharath Mission UdupiZillaPanchayath on 11th February 2020.
  15. 102 NSS volunteers participated in the“Moral education workshop” Programme on 15th February 2020.
  16. 102 NSS volunteers have participated in the Extension Activities, Cleaning and Education Campaign conducted in the adopted village Balkur throughout the year.
  17. 67 NSS volunteers participated in the ‘NOVEL CORONAVIRUS COVID-19 AWARENESS RALLY’ conducted by the NSS wing of Sri Sharada College Basrur in collaboration with Primary Health Centre Basrur on 12th March 2020.
