SRI SHARADA MOOLIKA VANA (Herbal Garden) AND RAIN WATER HARVESTING UNIT

Goal:  To inculcate awareness of environmental protection, medicinal plants and folk medicine,  Herbal Garden is established on the Campus.

Context:   As a part of out reaching and community development programme, a Herbal Garden was established in our campus. It is one of the requirements of the day that an  awareness needs to be developed among the students of the college regarding the bio-diversity, environmental protection, Medicinal plants, folk medicine, importance of planting of medicinal saplings etc. There being enough opportunity to develop a full-fledged herbal garden, now it has been established on experimental basis. This is also very helpful for  the village community living nearby and intends to provide information and create awareness among the students  of nearby schools.

The Practice:  Our College has established an Herbal Garden by using 0.40 acres of land. A large variety of medicinal plants especially plants related to folk medicine are planted. A good fencing, water facility and a gardener is provided by the institution to look after the plants. Mr. Purushothama Balyaya, Assistant  Professor having hereditary folk medicinal skill, is in charge of herbal garden. Many awareness programmes in this regard are conducted in the College with   the Collaboration of Sri Dharmasthala Gramodyoga Yojane. Vanamahostava Programme is being conducted by our NSS and NCC wings within this area. We are also planning to start a certificate course in Herbal Medicine in future.

          

RAIN WATER HARVESTING UNIT

Rain water harvesting unit of our college is constructed for the purpose of collection of rain water from the college building top during the rainy season and same should be sent to 10 feet beneath the ground level.It has cost  Rs. 77355. For the purpose of collection of rainwater from the roof top 50 meters, 4 inches pipes are used. This connects the ground level from where the water is directly sent for filtering below the level of 10 feet.10 feet under the layer of the earth is distributed with 5 layers of filtering; 5 feet sand, ½ feet charcoal, 2 feet crushed stone 20 MM, 2 feet crushed stone 40 MM, 3 feet granite stone.

This unit is constructed in the middle of the herbal garden ( Sri Sharada Moolika Vana)  near the college well. After the construction of this unit, well water level is increased even in the summer season. This has immense help for watering for the herbal plants especially during summer season.
